In the commercial construction industry, safety isn’t just a set of rules—it’s a mindset. At Holman Inc., we believe that building a culture of safety is one of the most important investments a company can make. A strong safety culture not only protects your team but also boosts efficiency, morale, and your reputation with clients and stakeholders.
Why Safety Culture Matters
A culture of safety goes beyond compliance. It’s about creating an environment where safety is integrated into every decision, from pre-construction planning to the final walk-through. Workers at every level—from field crews to management—should be empowered to speak up, take responsibility, and look out for one another.
Companies with strong safety cultures often experience:
- Fewer accidents and injuries
- Lower insurance and workers’ comp costs
- Higher employee satisfaction and retention
- Better project timelines and fewer delays
Key Elements of a Safety-First Culture
- Leadership Commitment
Safety starts at the top. When company leadership models and prioritizes safety, the message resonates throughout the team. - Ongoing Training
Regular, job-specific training helps workers stay updated on best practices, new equipment, and changing OSHA regulations. - Open Communication
Encourage workers to report hazards and near-misses without fear of retaliation. Feedback loops create trust and continuous improvement. - Clear Protocols & Accountability
Well-documented safety procedures and visible signage reduce confusion and help maintain consistency. - Recognition & Rewards
Acknowledge teams or individuals who demonstrate safe practices. Positive reinforcement builds morale and reinforces safe habits.
Safety-First Culture in Practice
We’ve seen firsthand how investing in safety pays off. For example, every Monday we have a Toolbox talk that focuses on safety. We created an internal Safety Council that includes two members from our office team and two members from our field team. We meet monthly to discuss what’s trending in the industry for safety as well as what trainings we can offer internally to keep our team robust in all things safety. We attend Safety conferences outside of Holman, Inc. to make sure that we are up to the date on the latest safety apparel and technology. Since 2022, we have had no safety incidents to report on our OSHA30 annual report.
Prioritize Safety
Creating a safety-first culture isn’t a one-time initiative—it’s an ongoing commitment. At Holman Inc., we stand by the idea that excellence begins with safety. Whether you’re a contractor, project manager, or facility owner, embedding safety into your company DNA can lead to stronger projects and healthier teams.
